Conclusions

  • We can increasingly design new materials for specific applications, for example GaN

  • GaN-based blue and green LEDs have been designed and are already commercialised

  • There is a wide range of other GaN-based devices with large potential market sales

  • Further research into GaN-base materials and devices should yield ultra efficient white LEDs for lighting, UV lasers for DVDs and high-power, high-frequency transistors for communications.

  • GaN is a very exciting new material with huge opportunities
