The Sterling Group Competition 2006

Competition Co-ordinator Dr S.E. Clift, University of Bath, UK

We are pleased to announce the brief of this year’s Sterling Group Competition
is to develop a web site to address the question “How can engineering address
the challenge of global warming?” We are particularly interested in the
ways in which industry can adapt to reduce carbon emissions.

The topic has deliberately been chosen in order to encourage imagination, creativity
and flair amongst competitors. It is intended that the flexibility of this brief
will enable competitors to derive a large measure of enjoyment from participating
in the competition.

Teams of students from Junior Colleges, Polytechnics, Secondary Schools and
International Schools in Singapore are eligible to enter. Each team must have
no more than 4 members, and there is no limit on the number of teams entering
from a given school or college.

Prizes

A trophy will be presented to the winning college and each student in the winning
team will receive a certificate. In addition, there will be cash prizes of £400
to the school or college, and £150 to each winning competitor giving a
maximum of £600 per team. The trophy will be presented at the Sterling
Group reception to be held in Singapore in March 2006. All competitors will
receive a Certificate of Participation.

Rules

  1. The title of the web site is “How can engineering address the challenge
    of global warming?”
    .
  2. Each team must have no more than 4 members. Names of team members must be
registered with the competition coordinator. A student can only be a member
of one team. Each web site must list the names of the participating students
and the name of the team.
  3. Team members must create the web site. There must be no external professional
involvement and inappropriate advertising must be avoided.
  4. Direct copying of text from website or books is not allowed. All ideas and
information identified from external sources must be re-expressed in the competitors
    own words.
  5. Source material used must be referenced in an accepted academic style (see
    http://www.bath.ac.uk/library/guides/references.html for details)
  6. A range of references sources should be used e.g. websites and printed material.
  7. Entries are to be mounted on a server of the college or school’s own
choice. The competition co-ordinator will then arrange for them to be linked
to the Sterling Group’s web site (www.sterlinggroup.org.uk)
so as to be accessible to all competitors for the judging phase of the competition.

Peer group judging

Each individual student team member will be asked to select a first, second
and third choice of website (excluding their own team’s submission) and to email
their choices to the competition co-ordinator.

Any teams indulging in reciprocal voting (of the “you vote for me and
I’ll vote for you” type) will have the offending votes removed from
their total.

The winner will be the college with the largest number of 1st choice votes.
In the event of a tie, 2nd and 3rd choices will be taken into consideration
to produce an outright winner. The winner will be announced at a reception to
be held in Singapore in March 2006.

Timetable

The final date for registering the names of the team members is 6th
January 2006
.

The URL of completed websites will need to be emailed to the competition coordinator
by 10th February 2006.

The closing date for registration of votes is 24th February 2006.

Any questions please contact the competition coordinator Dr S E Clift ([email protected]).
